Understanding Rights-Managed Content and Licensing in NIVOMAX
Last Updated on August 12, 2024 | 4 min read
Appropriate compliance to rights managed content and software licensing is crucial for maintaining good practices when operating in the digital sphere. For users of NIVOMAX, Synaxiom’s innovative IETP/IETPM platform, it is essential to understand the licensing structure to ensure legal compliance and maximize content utility. This article explores the rights-managed content and licensing framework within the NIVOMAX ecosystem, highlighting the roles of ePub Suppliers, end-users, and Synaxiom.
ePubs Suppliers Defined
An “ePubs Supplier” is the organization responsible for distributing NIVOMAX software and managing the sale of licenses for digital technical publications accessed via the NIVOMAX Viewer.
NIVOMAX Software Licensing
NIVOMAX operates under a licensing model in which ePub Suppliers purchase software licenses and manage the inclusion of their customers—the end-users—into their authorized user pool. This arrangement allows end-users to access the NIVOMAX platform without needing to purchase individual software licenses themselves. It’s important to note that this does not constitute sublicensing or license assignment. Users are advised to refer to the End User Agreement between their organization and the ePub Supplier for specific terms of use.
Prohibited Practices
Installing NIVOMAX Network (LAN) Viewers over a WAN accessed through a VPN is strictly prohibited. For more information on network configurations, please see our article on Understanding Networks: LAN, WAN, and VPN Considerations for NIVOMAX.
Data Licenses – Licensing of Digital Tech Pubs Products
The licensing that directly affects end users pertains to digital products, specifically the Technical Publication Libraries purchased from the ePub Supplier. This is governed by a separate agreement between the ePub Supplier and the end user and does not involve Synaxiom or the NIVOMAX platform itself. Assuming the ePub Supplier is authorized to distribute these products, the terms of content access and usage are typically outlined as follows:
- Duration of Use: Generally structured as a yearly subscription, though terms can vary depending on the ePub Supplier.
- Type of Media: Access to digital content is exclusively through NIVOMAX Viewers. While libraries are mostly encrypted and viewable only through NIVOMAX Viewers, individual pages may be exported for personal use (either to print or as an unencrypted PDF), but not for commercial use or redistribution.
- Exclusivity and Access: Each digital product license is tied to activation on a single device. By default, the license also grants complimentary web viewer access to the same digital content for the activated user.
Data License Configuration Options for ePub Suppliers
Default Behavior | Customizable Options | |
---|---|---|
NIVOMAX Viewer Desktop Edition | Each installation requires one license, even if it’s for the same user. |
|
NIVOMAX Network Edition – Data Server | Activating a digital product on the NIVOMAX Network Edition Data Server requires at least one license, assigned to the Data Server Administrator. Additional licenses are needed for more concurrent connections from Network Client Viewers. | License management is centralized; additional client connections require extra licenses. |
NIVOMAX Network Edition – Client Viewer | Client Viewer applications anonymously connect to the Data Server. The total concurrent connections cannot exceed the number of licenses activated on the Data Server for the digital product. | Access is managed solely at the Data Server level; individual Client Viewers are not managed. |
NIVOMAX Viewer Web Edition | When assigned a digital product by the Data License Administrator, the user gains immediate access on the NIVOMAX Web Viewer application. The online concurrent access may be limited based on the ePubs Supplier’s management system settings. |
